DOTI’s Top 3 Picks from WWDC 2017

News & Updates: Unless you’re living under a rock, you’re likely well aware that WWDC 2017 is currently in full swing and we love it! Here’s what we’re most excited about.
It’s WWDC 2017 folks!

Being avid game developers ourselves, a few things stood out for us this year at WWDC. While we could go on for days about the wicked cool stuff they announced, we’ll keep it simple, and present our top 3 picks for WWDC 2017.

PICK 1 – The New iMac Pro

Get ready to drool fellow geeks. Apple is finally taking high performance hardware seriously.

Thanks to the rumour mill, we all knew the current iMacs were getting a little performance bump — and a performance bump is just what they got. However, we didn’t expect a brand new breed of beast: the iMac Pro. We’re not gonna lie, we dropped a little mud in our pants when we saw this one!

Better save up for Christmas, because this bad boy is coming in December 2017, and if you take a look at the maxed out specs, trust us, you’ll want one.

PICK 2 – Augmented Reality

Have you ever wanted to do something in AR, but just didn’t have the time to learn frameworks like Vuforia or OpenCV? Well good news! Apple just made things a whole lot easier.

Introducing ARKit. As expected, Apple took things to the next level. Forget about tracking cards, this kit is environment-aware and will do all of the heavy lifting. Right out-of-the-box, this framework will transform your dining room table in to a Virtual War Zone!

The best part: ARKit integrates seamlessly into SceneKit, SpriteKit, and Metal. Even the heavy hitters, like Unity and Unreal, will add support for ARKit. Huzzah!

What the heck Apple, did you just kill the Microsoft Hololens? Yikes!

PICK 3 – Machine Learning

Machine Learning is undeniably the future of artificial intelligence. But learning how to do it requires years of training, development, pain, sweat, and tears. However. thanks to Apple, we can now get there faster.

Introducing the Vision framework. This framework has it all: facial recognition, feature detection, image classification, object tracking, and more. Vision sits on top of Core ML giving us access to all of these cool AI goodies.

BONUS PICK – Affinity Photo

Affinity Photo was announced and released for iOS. Eat your shorts Adobe! If you haven’t already, you can snag your very own copy from the App Store.

Next Steps

So why did we pick these 3 things? Simple! We’re indie game developers, and we think these things will open some new doors.

Sure… the new iMac Pro’s are expensive, but if you can afford one, we highly recommend getting one, because these machines can do it all — like Chuck Norris! Simply put: if you back your craft with one of these machines, you’ll be able to push yourself to that next level.

What about ARKit and machine learning? Well, incorporating AR into your games can breath life into stale ideas. Now, go forth and make your own Pokemon Go. Hurry up! What are you waiting for?

Finally, the best part about all of this is how well these things compliment one another. Just imagine the next level of games you’ll be able to build with these technologies backing your projects.

Well folks, that brings us to the end of our top 3 picks. Was there something else that stood out more for you? Let us know in the comments below.

Enjoy the rest of WWDC!
